Tierra del Fuego — At the Edge of the World

Ushuaia is the southernmost city on our planet and the capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province. The archipelago itself was named by mistake: when Ferdinand Magellan’s ship approached its shores, sailors saw lights in the darkness and mistook them for a volcanic eruption. In reality, those were simply the fires of the local indigenous people.

This is the gateway for Antarctic expeditions and home to the world’s southernmost landmarks — including the southernmost national park, lighthouse, and railway on the planet.

Nearby, vast colonies of marine animals and seabirds thrive — from playful penguins and majestic sea lions and elephant seals to elegant cormorants and beyond.

Explore the region with guided cruises along the Beagle Channel, discover Estancia Harberton — the southernmost ranch, enjoy a journey through the national park aboard a historic train, take breathtaking helicopter flights, and experience fishing in the tranquil waters of Lake Escondido.
